Sept 12:
Future Teachers to Demonstrate Solidarity for Public Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(BURNABY) As a part of a "Public School Solidarity Day of Action" being organized by student teachers, post secondary education students will march from the SFU campus to join striking teachers on the picket line on Friday September 12, 2014.

Student teachers will join BCTF members at University Highlands Elementary School, which is located on the top of Burnaby Mountain in Burnaby. The march will begin at 11:00 AM, leaving from the SFU Faculty of Education Building.

"As student teachers, future professionals, and members of the community, we support and call for adequate funding for B.C. public schools," said Tom Kertes, a student teacher at SFU who had planned to start his final practicum on Monday.

"Christy Clark's hardline position against public school teachers is threatening the integrity of public schools. The Premier seems more intent on running a wrecking ball through the public school system than on building a path to end the labour dispute through a fair agreement with teachers," said Kertes.

Education students will be joined by members of the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) and others who support the BCTF by calling on government to reach a fair resolution in the labour dispute.

Education students at SFU have organized a Solidarity Committee to show support for public education and have adopted a statement of principles in support of the BCTF and it calls for a fair resolution to the labour dispute.
